IndyCar’s Dario Franchitti has second surgery on broken ankle

Four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti had a second surgery Monday to repair his right ankle that was broken in a recent crash.
The latest three-hour surgery was to repair the talus bone in Franchitti’s ankle, according to his team, Target Chip Ganassi Racing.
Ganassi quoted Dr. Terry Trammel, orthopedic consultant for the Izod IndyCar Series, as saying the procedure “went perfectly” and that the driver’s “post-operation X-rays looked great.”
The accident occurred Oct. 6 at the end of a street race in Houston, with Franchitti’s car going airborne and crashing into the catch fence.
Franchitti, 40, also suffered two spinal fractures. About a dozen spectators and an IndyCar official also were hurt by debris from Franchitti’s car.
There is only one race left in the IndyCar season, this Saturday night at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, and veteran driver Alex Tagliani will drive Franchitti’s car.
Franchitti’s teammate, Scott Dixon, leads the series point standings in search of his third IndyCar championship.
