Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross are upset in AVP semifinals

Share

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and partner April Ross, the top-seeded team at the AVP Championships beach volleyball tournament, were upset in the semifinals by third-seeded Lauren Fendrick and Brittany Hochevar, 21-15, 21-17, on Sunday at Huntington Beach.

It was only the second loss in 18 matches for Walsh Jennings and Ross, who paired up this season after Walsh Jennings’ partner in all three of her Olympic-winning performances, Misty May-Treanor, retired.

Fendrick and Hochevar will play fourth-seeded Jennifer Fopma and Brook Sweat in the final later Sunday afternoon.

Fopma and Sweat upset second-seeded Emily Day and Summer Ross, 18-21, 21-11, 15-13, in the other semifinal.

Had the 35-year-old Walsh Jennings won the tournament, she would have become the winningest woman in beach volleyball with 113 tournament victories.

Walsh Jennings is tied with May-Treanor.
