Kings waive Jeff Schultz, send three players to Manchester

Sunday was another significant “moving day” in the NHL, with teams scrambling to get to the 23-man roster limit and below the $64.3-million salary cap by Monday.

The Kings got closer to the roster limit by putting defenseman Jeff Schultz on waivers and sending three young forwards — left wing Tanner Pearson, center Linden Vey and right wing Tyler Toffoli — to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate in Manchester, N.H.

That would put the Kings at 24 players. Team have until 9 a.m on Monday to claim Schultz, and there was a large group of veterans put on waivers league-wide, as teams attempt to get to 23 by Monday.

The final Kings’ move appears to involve goalie Mathieu Garon, who has been in training camp on a free-agent tryout. But the organization has not yet announced a determination of his future.

Schultz signed as a free agent with the Kings in July, agreeing to a one-year deal worth $700,000, after the Washington Capitals bought him out.

Kings Coach Darryl Sutter essentially foreshadowed the waiver move on Thursday after practice when he was asked about the progress of Schultz and defenseman Keaton Ellerby.

“Jeff’s been a guy that’s had to adjust to how we play,” Sutter said Thursday. “I said before, it’s not easy for a guy to come from the East to the West, first off.

“There’s big adjustments between teams, not just in getting to know players but big adjustment in terms of style of play and in terms of responsibility in certain parts of the game.”

Making significant leaps forward in camp were Pearson and center Nick Shore, who was sent down earlier. Toffoli struggled early on and got better in the latter stages of camp. It is not out of the question that Pearson, Vey and Toffoli will be back in Los Angeles at some point this season.
