Stars’ Ryan Garbutt called to hearing for hit on Ducks’ Dustin Penner

Dallas Stars left wing Ryan Garbutt has been summoned to the NHL Department of Player Safety for an in-person hearing following his Sunday night hit at Honda Center that left Ducks wing Dustin Penner knocked briefly unconscious, the NHL announced Monday.

Penner did not make the Ducks’ flight to Toronto on Monday, where they’ll start an eight-game road trip Tuesday. He stayed behind in Orange County to undergo further tests and evaluation, the team announced Monday morning.

A suspension of more than five games is on the table for Garbutt due to the league invoking the in-person hearing, as required by the collective-bargaining agreement with players.

Garbutt, who scored a first-period goal Sunday after committing a kneeing penalty that led to a Teemu Selanne power-play goal, struck Penner at 5:28 of the second period.

Penner had picked up a roughing penalty late in the first period that was followed 17 seconds later by a Shawn Horcoff power-play goal.

On a Ducks’ power play in the second with the Stars leading 3-2, Penner released a shot in the Dallas zone as Garbutt skated directly toward him and delivered a hit that featured helmet-to-helmet contact.

The league said it is considering charging and illegal check to the head violations.

Some Ducks believed Garbutt left the ice to launch at Penner, with television replays showing Garbutt’s skates leaving the ice at impact.

Penner laid motionless for seconds before trainer Joe Huff met him and he ultimately stood and walked groggily with the support of first-line teammates Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf to the dressing room.

Penner underwent a battery of medical tests that continued after the game, a team spokesman said, and he watched a replay of Garbutt’s hit on him repeatedly in the dressing room as the Ducks proceeded to match their team record with a seventh straight win, 6-3.

“The league does a great job, they look at this stuff so closely,” Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said. “We’ll just wait. I’m sure they’re going to do what they do.”
