With their QB situation a mess, would Raiders chase Matt Barkley?

With 15 days to go before the start of the NFL regular season, the Oakland Raiders don’t have their answer at quarterback.

Presumed starter Matt Flynn played poorly in Friday’s exhibition game against Chicago, completing three of six passes for 19 yards with two interceptions.

Flynn was outplayed by Terrelle Pryor (seven of nine for 93 yards, one touchdown), but Pryor is raw and could use more time learning the position before he becomes a full-time NFL starter. He’s the first to admit he was never taught how to properly throw the ball, and only got his first crash course in that this off-season, working at USC with throwing coach Tom House.

Asked about the starting quarterback after Friday’s 34-26 loss -- a game that was 27-3 at half, before the reserves took over -- Raiders Coach Dennis Allen confirmed everything is up in the air.

“I think obviously we have to look at it,” he said. “I think when you look at it I don’t think Matt played well in this game. Obviously, I thought Terrelle came in and gave us a spark. I thought he played well in the game. I think that’s something that we have to go and look at it. I’m not going to make any decisions on anything, obviously, tonight. I want to get a chance to go back and look at the tape and see how things went. But it was obvious that Terrelle gave us a little bit of a spark tonight.”

It’s noteworthy that Raiders owner Mark Davis wanted to draft USC’s Matt Barkley, and the team probably would have done so had Philadelphia not traded up to the top of the fourth round to grab him.

Barkley appears to be an odd fit for Coach Chip Kelly’s system with the Eagles, although it’s fair to say we won’t know exactly what that system will look like, and Michael Vick -- this week named the starter -- and Nick Foles are completely different quarterbacks as well.

Regardless, it will be interesting to watch if the Raiders make another run at Barkley, especially if their quarterback situation continues to go sideways.
