CBS announces new ‘Thursday Night Football’ music after Rihanna slam

Rihanna let everyone know Tuesday morning exactly how she feels about being dragged into the Ray Rice controversy by CBS and “Thursday Night Football.”

To sum it up: She’s angry. Very much so.

The Thursday night broadcasts were supposed to begin each week with a segment featuring Rihanna singing a version of the song “Run This Town” -- which she originally recorded with Jay Z and Kanye West -- along with narration from actor Don Cheadle.

Last week’s game -- the first of the season for CBS on that night -- featured Rice’s former team, the Baltimore Ravens, and came just days after the public release of a video showing the running back knocking out his then-fiancee in an elevator.

CBS made the decision to pull the Rihanna segment, suggesting it was too light-hearted in the context of the rest of the opening portion of the show, which focused largely on domestic violence.

Of course, Rihanna was a very public victim of domestic violence back in 2009, leading many to speculate that that was the main reason she was removed from the broadcast.

It seems like the pop superstar might share that belief, according to a tweet she posted Tuesday morning: “CBS you pulled my song last week, now you wanna slide it back in this Thursday? NO,” she wrote, throwing in an F-bomb and closing with, “Y’all are sad for penalizing me for this.”

Then she added: “The audacity ...”

A few hours later, CBS Sports announced that it would not restore her song this week.

“Beginning this Thursday, we will be moving in a different direction with some elements of our ‘Thursday Night Football’ open,” the division said in a statement. “We will be using our newly created ‘Thursday Night Football’ theme music to open our game broadcast.”
