Tim Tebow stuck on sideline in exhibition game against Lions
It was a Tim Tebow no-show.
Tebow, the NFL’s most famous (and polarizing) reserve quarterback, watched from the sideline Thursday as his New England Patriots lost an exhibition game at Detroit, 40-9.
Tom Brady played the entire first half for the Patriots, and backup Ryan Mallett took over after halftime. Tebow struggled in the previous two exhibition games, going five for 19 for 54 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. By all indications, he’s on the bubble to make the 53-man roster.
Asked why he only played two quarterbacks, Patriots Coach Bill Belichick said flatly: “Because we only played two quarterbacks.”
After the game, Tebow said he wasn’t discouraged.
“There are going to be ups and downs,” he said. “That’s what life is, and you just have to handle them as best you can.”
Tebow warmed up before the game and periodically threw the ball on the sideline. Fans at Ford Field chanted his name, hoping to see him play.
“Obviously it’s nice whenever you have support,” he said. “But you just try to stay focused.”
