Bruins not unhappy with returns against Arizona State

UCLA found another offensive spark on the defense.

Injuries left cornerback Ishmael Adams as the Bruins’ kickoff returner. Devin Fuller and Steven Manfro, UCLA’s top returners, did not suit up for the game, but there wasn’t any drop-off in the Bruins’ 38-33 loss to Arizona State in the Rose Bowl on Saturday.

Adams returned his first kickoff 58 yards, and Brett Hundley threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Devin Lucien on the first play. Adams had a 69-yard return in the second quarter to set up a 23-yard field goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn.

Adams also added punt returns to his job description. His 49-yard return set up a 48-yard field goal by Fairbairn.

Adams averaged 37 yards on five kickoff returns.

Fuller sits

Losing Fuller left UCLA without one of its top playmakers.

Fuller, who is believed to have a hip injury, has a team-high 40 receptions for 453 yards and four touchdowns. He was also their top kickoff returner, averaging 28 yards a return.

Manfro sat out his fourth consecutive game with an ankle injury.

Big boot, big misses

Fairbairn matched his career-long field goal with a 48-yard kick in the first quarter.

He was two of six on kicks 40 yards or more in 2012. He is five of nine this season.

Fairbairn also had a 23-yard field goal, but he missed kicks of 39 and 33 yards, which turned out to be important in a five-point loss.

Hundley moves up

Hundley’s 253 passing yards gave him 6,277 for his career, moving him into fourth on UCLA’s all-time list. He moved past Tom Ramsey (1979-82) who had 6,168 yards. Cade McNown (1994-98) is the Bruins’ all-time leader with 10,708 yards. Drew Olson (2002-05) is second with 8,532 yards and Cory Paus is third with 6,877.

Hundley’s two touchdown passes moved him past Ramsey into third on the UCLA all-time list. Hundley has 51 career touchdown passes. McNown had 68 and Olson 67.

Injury report

UCLA cornerback Fabien Moreau left the game in the first quarter with what appeared to be a pulled muscle.

Freshman Priest Willis replaced Moreau and was immediately picked on by Arizona State quarterback Taylor Kelly. Priest made a quality play, breaking up a pass on his first play. On the next series, he was called for pass interference and allowed Jaelen Strong to make a 22-yard reception.

Safeties Randall Goforth and Anthony Jefferson rotated at cornerback the remainder of the game.

Tackle Simon Goines left the game after reinjuring his right knee in the first quarter. Goines had missed four games after he injured the knee against Stanford. Xavier Su’a-Filo moved from guard to tackle. Scott Quessenberry took over at guard.

Receivers Darren Andrews and Grayson Mazzone suffered leg injuries. Andrews had his left leg immobilized.

UCLA played without running backs Damien Thigpen (ankle) and Malcolm Jones (head). Jordon James (ankle) was limited to one play.
