Joe Barry, who played at USC and coached Trojans linebackers in 2010 and 2011, has been hired as the Washington Redskins’ defensive coordinator, the team announced.

Barry, 44, has been the San Diego Chargers’ linebackers coach for the last three seasons.

Barry played linebacker at USC in 1992 and 1993. He was video coordinator in 1994 and a graduate assistant in 1995 working with the defensive line.

Barry coached in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before he became the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator in 2007. He returned to USC as part of former coach Lane Kiffin’s staff in 2010.

Barry left after the 2011 season to join the Chargers.
