USC quarterback Jalen Greene is working out as a receiver during player-run practices this month.

Coach Steve Sarkisian said Saturday that the redshirt freshman would play both positions when training camp opens in August.

“We’re just trying to maximize our roster and Jalen is a really good athlete,” Sarkisian said. “We just have to be really smart as a staff as to when we are using him to make sure he gets equal opportunities at both spots.”

Greene, 6 feet 1 and 195 pounds, was listed behind starting quarterback Cody Kessler and back up Max Browne on the spring depth chart.

Greene was the scout team quarterback last season and was awarded the offensive service team player of the year.

USC returns receivers Darreus Rogers, JuJu Smith, Steven Mitchell and Adoree’ Jackson. Junior college transfer Isaac Whitney joined the team in January and De’Quan Hampton will come aboard in training camp. Sophomore Ajene’ Harris is sidelined for the season after undergoing hip surgery.

Players are not made available to the media during June practices.
