Share

Big Bear Lake is betting that El Niño will continue to deliver on its big snow promise. So the mountain community will debut two new cool competitions in February: snowshoe races and fat-tire bike races.

It’s part of the bigger Big Bear Winter Festival that is set for Feb. 27-28.

Snowshoe Big Bear at 8 a.m. Feb. 27 offers 5K, 10K and 22K options for people who can book while wearing snowshoes. Races begin at the base of the Snow Summit ski resort and head up the mountain on groomed forest trails.

Fat Bike Big Bear at 1 p.m. the same day challenges cyclists to compete on six-, 10-, 14- and 18-mile groomed routes around the ski resort. Bike tires have to be at least 4 inches wide and riders may use tire studs for traction.

On Feb. 28, the fest continues with demonstrations by fat-tire bike and snowshoe racers, for those who want to see how its done.

Plenty of music, vendor booths, a no-host bar and a barbecue are scheduled for both days.

You can register online for the snowshoe races ($40 to $60) and the fat-tire bike races ($50 for each ride). Those who want to do both pay a discounted rate of $80.
