Black Friday-Cyber Monday: 8 high-end hotels as low as $196 a night

Top hotels such as Waldorf Astoria New York, Thompson Chicago, Loews, Omni and others are offering Black Friday-Cyber Monday discounts that can cut the cost of your room by as much as $100 a night. It’s a chance to see where the other half stays at wallet-pleasing prices. Here are eight deals I like. Prices don’t include taxes and in some cases resort fees.

Waldorf Astoria New York: When it’s winter in New York City, who says you have to go outside? The Cyber Week deal offered by the Art Deco landmark at 301 Park Ave. promises $229 a night on select travel dates in January and February. Rooms usually range from $329 a night to $2,299 a night in December, according to online rates. Reservations must be made between Monday and Dec. 6 to get the Cyber Week rate. Info: Waldorf Astoria New York

Loews Hotel Resorts: The luxury brand offers up to 40% off its best available rate at 16 locations plus free in-room Internet access for stays through April 30. The Big Deal Cyber Weekend Sale includes resorts in Hollywood, Santa Monica, San Diego and Tucson, Ariz., but excludes properties in Orlando, Fla. Finding a room at less than $250 a night isn’t out of the question, particularly when locations at Coronado Bay in San Diego and Tucson show $249 rates before the discount. Reservations must be made between 9:01 p.m. Pacific Friday and midnight Tuesday to get the discount. Info: Loews Hotel Resorts

Omni Hotels & Resorts: If you’re going away anytime between now and the end of the year, Omni will take 40% off the cost of your room during its Click Quick! offer at more than 50 hotels nationwide. Locations include Los Angeles, Palm Springs and San Diego as well as New York, Boston and Philadelphia for stays through Dec. 31. Sale begins 10:01 Pacific time Friday and continues through Monday; again, you should find prices well below $250 at some of the locations. (Members of the hotel’s Select Guest loyalty program get early sale access on Wednesday.) Info: Omni Hotels & Resorts

Kimpton Hotels in L.A.: Two hotels take a different tack with a Home for the Holidays package good for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s. Rooms start at $230 a night at the Hotel Wilshire (6317 Wilshire Blvd.) and $200 a night at Palomar Los Angeles/Westwood (10740 Wilshire Blvd.) -- and come with a $25 gift card at the Grove or the Westfield Shopping Center in Century City. The deal is good for stays through Jan. 10. Info: Call (866) 650-2154 and use the code “BHOME.”

The Benjamin in New York City: This Midtown Manhattan hotel was built in 1927 and has the honor of having been painted by Georgia O’Keeffe from her nearby apartment, the hotel says. Its Black-Cyber Sale offers nonrefundable rates of $199 for a guestroom, $219 for a deluxe studio and $249 for a deluxe studio with two beds. (Slightly higher refundable rates also are available as part of the sale.) Rooms usually start around $279 a night (having checked some dates online), so the savings is a good one in the pricey NYC market. Info: The Benjamin and use the code “CYBERN” (nonrefundable) or “CYBER1” (refundable).

Shore Hotel in Santa Monica: The sleekly designed boutique hotel at 1515 Ocean Ave. near the Santa Monica Pier offers a one-day Cyber Monday sale with rooms starting at $196 a night. It’s a good savings on the usual $300-plus rooms and a good place to stash out-of-towners if the house fills up over the holidays. The sale is on Monday only for travel through Feb. 2. Info: Shore Hotel, and use the code “cyber.”

Terranea: The ocean-front resort on the Palos Verdes Peninsula is well-known to insiders who come for a stay or the spa. The resort takes 35% off the best available rate (usually starting at $395 a night in winter) for stays through Feb. 28. Sale happens between Friday and Monday, using the code “BLACKFRIDAY” or “CYBERMONDAY” when you make a reservation. Info: Terranea

Thompson Chicago: The tony hotel is in the city’s Gold Coast neighborhood west of Lake Michigan, an area that’s all about historic architecture. Starting Monday, you can book three nights for $549, which also includes private transportation to and from the hotel and a special welcome gift. The package is available for stays through Feb. 28. Sale begins Monday and continues through Dec. 9. Info: Thompson Chicago, and use the coed “CYBERM2013.”
