The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk will offer unlimited rides on the Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster for the rest of the year in hopes of breaking the million-rider mark for 2010.

For the price of a single ride ($5), visitors can ride the 1924 wooden coaster all day from Sunday through Dec. 31.

The millionth rider will get a commemorative coin. Everybody else gets to ride a great, old California coaster all day long. Word is that the Dipper is about 12,000 riders away from a million for the year.

The classic woodie hasn’t logged 1 million riders in a single year since 2002. A National Historic Landmark that is said to be the fifth oldest continuously operating coaster in the U.S., the ride has thrilled more than 58,400,000 people over the last 86 years.

Weather permitting, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. for limited winter operations during the million-rider milestone run. Call (831) 423-5590 to confirm the operation status of the ride.

Season passholders and visitors who purchase a $20 unlimited ride wristband can ride the Giant Dipper all day long as well.
