Families looking for more than the usual sun-and-sand trip to Hawaii might consider a pedal-powered tour of the Big Island.

This six-day itinerary, offered by Bicycle Adventures, is designed to appeal to youngsters who will bike on safe routes (average ride is 20 miles per day), hike to jungle waterfalls, watch lava pour into the ocean and snorkel with green sea turtles.

The bike tour begins and ends at the Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Kohala Coast. Accommodations along the bike route are at the Hilo Hawaii Hotel, Chalet Kilauea and Sheraton Kona at Keauhou Bay.
