Getting there: Air France and AirLib have nonstops to Paris from LAX. US Airways has direct service with one stop; United, British Airways, Delta, Lufthansa, Continental, Northwest, American, Swiss Air Lines and KLM have connecting flights with a change of planes. Restricted round-trip fares begin at $799.

We rented a car to drive the 175 miles from Paris to Burgundy. During many trips to Europe, and especially to France, in the past 27 years, we have found the best rates at Europe by Car, (800) 252-9401, or Auto Europe, (800) 223-5555.

Where to stay: We rented our house, known as Hunting Lodge Vesvres, by typing “Burgundy rental” into our favorite search engine, Google.com. That took us to https://rentalsfrance.com, among other sites. The house, owned by a Frenchwoman living in Germany, had all the modern conveniences we were looking for--including washing machine and dishwasher--while retaining its 18th century charm. The house, which can sleep six, has a kitchen, dining room, living room and bathroom on the main level and three bedrooms and two more bathrooms upstairs. It is in the countryside about 10 minutes south of Langres and 35 minutes north of Dijon. We paid $1,750, a high-season rate, for a week.

The best restaurant within two hours: La Côte d’Or, 2 Rue Argentine, Saulieu; 80-90-53-53, fax 80-64-08-92, https://www.relaischateaux.fr/loiseau. Entrees $40-$65. Specialties include roast duck, a terrine of pigeon and foie gras, chicken with black truffles and calf’s liver with preserved shallots.
