Woman’s body found on Delta flight from L.A. to Atlanta

A Delta Air Lines flight crew found a woman’s body in the restroom of a plane that landed in Atlanta this morning after departing LAX last night, authorities said.

There were no signs of foul play, according to Atlanta police Lt. Scott Bennett. The woman’s name and hometown have not been released, but Bennett said she was in her 60s and did not appear to be ill, although she was carrying medication with her on the flight.

A fellow passenger on Delta Flight 950, which had departed LAX at 10:29 p.m. Tuesday, alerted the flight crew to check on the woman just as the plane was making its descent into Atlanta shortly before 6 a.m., Bennett said. The passenger said the woman had been in the restroom for about a half hour, Bennett said.

Crew members found the woman in the restroom and unresponsive, Bennett said. They alerted Delta staff, paramedics and police on the ground, said Anthony Black, an Atlanta-based Delta spokesman.

A doctor on the plane checked the woman’s vital signs and advised the crew that she was dead, Bennett said.

The body was being taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation medical examiner’s office this morning, Bennett said. An autopsy is scheduled later today.

Spokesmen for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Atlanta FBI field office, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport did not immediately return calls this morning. An LAX spokesman referred calls to Delta.
