Campsites still available for the Fourth

If you’ve not yet made campsite reservations for the Fourth of July holiday, you’re in luck. Although officials at California State Parks note that many popular parks are booked, some are still available for the holiday, including — would you believe? — Crystal Cove, Montaña de Oro and San Simeon.

Fifty-one state parks have campsites available Friday to July 3, California State Parks said, although not all of the sites are desirable. A list of parks with openings is at https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=22687.

About 25 are first-come, first served. If you are aiming for one of those, Sheryl Watson of the parks department suggests you “get there early, as early as you can” — even the night before. Also, “look for parks that are inland and farther north,” she said.

If you are planning a trip in the cold days of January, camping reservations for that month become available Sunday.
