The JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix is a sprawling, 950-room hotel on four acres with lots of outdoor activities for grown-ups and children. This summer package includes golf and a $50 resort credit for rooms that start at $149 per night -- perfect for an affordable family getaway.

Yes, the Arizona desert gets hot in summer, but you can cool off by splashing around in the pools and gigantic water slide.

The deal: The freebies in the Family Fling & Swing Summer Package are what make this deal such a bargain. They include unlimited golf after 11 a.m. (greens fees usually run $49 to $69 in summer), a $50 resort credit, no resort fees, free Internet, free meals for kids 12 and younger (with a paid adult meal), free parking and 10% off retail purchases at the hotel. Use the code “ZJ5” when making a reservation.

Caveat: Because you can’t get on the course until 11 a.m. to score free golf with this package, you may encounter toasty temps.

When: The offer is good June 17 to Sept. 6.

Tested: I went online and found availability for three nights starting July 8 at the rate of $149 plus tax per rate. The room has two double beds and a balcony or patio and sleeps four. There’s a lot here for kids to do while parents are off playing golf: swimming at four pools and tubing on the Lazy River water course. Children 15 and younger can play or learn golf too -- free, every day after 3 p.m.
