Lake Tahoe: Fly-fishing for Father’s Day without roughing it? Sweet!

Who knew fly-fishing could be so cushy? The Resort at Squaw Creek in Lake Tahoe, Calif., has put together a Father’s Day package that includes instruction on fishing technique without leaving the hotel grounds. The package isn’t cheap, but it is novel, and it does save you money over regular prices.

The deal: This is one of those offers that I examined carefully because of the price tag. The Father’s Day Getaway starts at $369 a night, excluding tax and fees, and requires a two-night stay.

Here’s what it includes: a room; a three-hour fly-fishing class for two with expert Matt Heron in which you learn techniques and then practice at the resort’s stocked ponds; and a three-course trout dinner for two.

Fishing gear is included, so you don’t need to pack anything extra. The dinner is served at 8 p.m. Saturday at the hotel’s Six Peaks Grille.

There’s much to do at this 405-room resort: hiking, bicycling, boating on the lake or sharing some pool time with Dad. To get this deal, use the promo code “DADRSC” when booking online or by phone.

Tested: I checked online and found availability for Father’s Day weekend. The cheapest room that I could find had a forest view and two queen-sized beds for $369 a night or $738 for two nights, excluding tax and fees. Note too that a resort fee tacks on about $20 a night.

For comparison, I checked prices for the room, lesson and meal without the package: $180 per person for the fly fishing class, $30 per person for the meal and $239 a night at the best available rate for the room. I found a total savings of about $160 over the two nights.
