California: Giddyap to the Wild Horse Sanctuary
The Wild Horse Sanctuary, in Northern California near Lassen Volcanic National Park, is introducing three special trail rides for next year.
On April 27 and 28, Laird R. Blackwell will join riders and discuss wildflowers seen along the trails through the sanctuary’s oak woodland and chaparral. The cost is $455 per person; participants will receive a signed copy of Blackwell’s book, “Wildflowers of California: A Month-by Month Guide.”
Those looking for a more rough-and-ready vacation can join a work ride May 31-June 3 and help clear brush and prepare new trail routes. Riders will also lend a hand putting away saddles and tack and caring for the horses. The cost is $535 per person (pay for three days but ride for four); riders will work only two half-days.
A two-day excursion June 15 and 16 combines writin’ and ridin.’ Terri Farley, author of the “Phantom Stallion” and “Wild Horse Island” series for HarperCollins, will conduct a hands-on writing workshop. Riders will read their original pieces and receive feedback from Farley. The cost is $475 per person.
The Wild Horse Sanctuary trail-ride season runs through Oct. 13. Two- and three-day rides are available for $435 per person and $535 per person, respectively, which includes accommodations in cabins (bring your own sleeping bag) and all meals, including a cowboy barbecue, and beverages. The rides are suitable for all experience levels.
The Wildhorse Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of wild horses and burros.
