Ski season starts in Mammoth, with hopes for fresh snow

Mammoth Mountain kicks off its ski and snowboarding season Thursday (today) with a good chance of fresh powder to follow.
The day’s schedule starts at 8:30 a.m., when the first chair carries skiers and boarders up the hill, where they’ll find a slope cloaked in manufactured snow, mingled with remains of the 18 inches of real snow that fell in late October.
Chair lifts 1 and 3 will be running and the Panorama gondola will be offering scenic rides only.
Meanwhile, a storm is expected to arrived on Friday and stay through Saturday, possibly dropping enough snow to open more lifts and runs.
The resort’s communications director, Joani Lynch, said she expected more than 1,000 skiers and boarders for the opener. Among other festivities Thursday: a Champagne toast on the main lodge sundeck at 11 a.m. and live music afterward (by the Eastside Five). That night will include a premiere screening of the new snowboarding documentary “2112” in The Village at Mammoth.
Friday and Saturday bring DJs to the ski area’s Main Park Gondola, a pop-up art show (Friday) at the Grand Sierra Lodge in The Village at Mammoth; another new snowboarding documentary: “Horgasm: A Love Story” (Friday night); and concerts at the Eagle Lodge (Friday night) and Canyon Lodge (Saturday night).
Friday night’s bands include Blondfire and LA RIOTS. Saturday night’s: Sex Panthers and The RZA.
Same-day lift tickets are priced at $79 per adult from Nov. 8-22, rising to $89 Nov. 23-Dec. 21, then to $105 for the Dec. 22-Jan. 6. Details here.
