Snap up L.A.-N.Y. airfare for $165 during Southwest’s 40% off sale

Southwest’s Big Deal 40% Off sale ends tonight (Thursday), but there are still bargain airfares to be found for those with flexible travel dates this winter. The bad news is you can’t travel on Sundays, which eliminates the weekend getaway crowd. The good news is the long-haul fares are super-low, which makes it worth taking some extra time off.

I just bought a round-trip ticket from L.A. to New York (La Guardia) in early December for $165 and another round-trip ticket to Washington (Dulles) for the presidential inauguration in January for $196. (Prices include tax and fees.) Granted, I chose midweek dates and adjusted my flight times to score the cheapest fares. And it’s worth noting too that Southwest doesn’t charge for up to two checked bags.

I checked availability for sale rates to other destinations leaving L.A. on Dec. 1 and returning Dec. 4 and found:

--$59 to Las Vegas, $39 for return flight.
--$110 each way to Seattle.
--$81 each way to Chicago.

The sale ends at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time Thursday for travel from Nov. 28 through Dec. 12 and from Jan. 7 through Feb. 14. Blackout dates vary by route.
