Readers Recommend: Old Shanklin Guest House on the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is an easy one-hour ferry ride from Southampton, England. It is a lovely, quiet place to visit, including Queen Victoria’s summer residence near Cowes and the historic fortress of Carisbrooke Castle where King Charles I was imprisoned. My wife and I spent six days there, and we highly recommend the Old Shanklin Guest House. The five guest rooms are perfectly appointed by Sarah and Gareth James, the owners. In addition to the traditional English breakfast of sausages, bacon, egg, mushrooms and broiled tomatoes, the Jameses also prepare a tempting daily special. Rooms from about $102-$161..
