Legoland fans may pick among three different room themes -- kingdom, adventure or pirate -- when the hotel at Legoland California Resort in Carlsbad opens in May. For those who want to be first in line, packages on sale now feature stays that come with four park-hopper passes and breakfast too.

The deal: The Legoland Hotel sounds modest by mega-resort standards; it has just 250 rooms, according to the website. (By comparison, the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim has more than 950 rooms.) Each room has a queen-sized bed as well as a sleeping area for kids with a bunk bed and entertainment unit.

The Pre-Opening Special room package includes four two-day Resort Hopper tickets (good for Legoland California, Sea Life Aquarium and the Legoland Water Park) plus breakfast for up to four people. It also includes free Wi-Fi, early admission to the park and an in-room treasure hunt where kids win a Lego prize.

When: The hotel is accepting reservations for stays between May 7 and Aug. 31.

Tested: I checked online and found availability for one- and two-night stays on several dates in May and June. For example, a two-night stay June 7 to 9 costs $968 plus tax. (Right now, there are no room-only reservations offered.)

Here’s how I evaluated the deal: I calculated the cost of four passes (say two adults and two children) at $420 and breakfast at maybe $20 each for four each morning for a total of $580. I subtracted that from the $968 to find a room rate for two nights of about $166 a night.

I also found single nights for the package that cost $609 plus tax, which, subtracting the cost of passes and one breakfast for four, would put the room rate at about $109.
