Hard to believe that Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego charged just $8.16 for a room when it opened in 1963. Half a century later, that rate is still available -- if you pay regular price for two nights.

The deal: Stay two nights at the best available rate and receive a third night for $8.16. It’s all part of the 50th Anniversary Package at this resort, which features 287 rooms, swimming pools, fitness center, golf course and more. The deal must be reserved by phone using the code “RBI50.”

When: The offer is good for stays Memorial Day through Labor Day, with some blackout dates.

Tested: I called and worked with a reservation agent who answered my questions about the resort and helped me check several weekend dates for a three-night stay starting May 31, June 7 and July 12. Unfortunately, the inn was full on those dates but I did find the package available midweek July 14-17.

The first two nights cost $189 each but, with an unbelievably cheap third night, the total comes to $386 plus tax, or about $128 a night. Prices don’t include tax.
