Hawaii: Mokulele Airlines adds Big Island, Maui service
Mokulele Airlines, a small but growing Hawaiian air carrier, will add two new routes in September, adding scheduled service between the Big Island town of Waimea and Maui’s Kahului airport, plus a flight within Maui.
Mokulele’s flights to and from Waimea will begin Sept. 21. They will replace service dropped by PacificWings.
That same day, Mokulele will begin flights between Kapalua, at the northwest tip of Maui, and Hana, on the island’s east coast. The flights will be operated in conjunction with tour operators who will provide visitors with one-way ground transportation so they can experience the beauty of the Hana Highway but have the convenience of one-way air travel back across the island.
Mokulele, known by locals who sometimes use the airline for shopping trips, currently serves Hana (Maui); Hilo (Big Island); Honolulu (Oahu); Hoolehuha (Molokai); Kahalui (Maui); Kapalua (Maui); Kailua-Kona (Big Island); Lanai City (Lanai); and Lihue (Kauai).
The airline uses a fleet of nine-passenger Cessna Grand Caravans. That means that, except in Honolulu, Mokulele passengers don’t have to go through Transportation Security Administration screening. Such security checks are required only for flights capable of carrying 10 or more passengers, said Dave Barry, a Mokulele vice president. All passengers traveling out of Honolulu International Airport’s Commuter Terminal are subject to TSA screening.
An introductory one-way fare of $59 is being offered on the Waimea-Kahului route. Reservations must be made by Oct. 31.
