LAX issues more tickets for preview tour of Tom Bradley terminal
If you missed out on a ticket to tour the new Tom Bradley International Terminal, you may have a second chance: Because of demand, more free tickets for Saturday’s preview have been made available.
Tickets for 90-minute LAX Appreciation Day will continue to be issued while they last, a spokeswoman said. It’s the first time the public will have an opportunity to see the new south concourse gate areas, the Great Hall and the new retail/restaurant area created in the airport renovation.
No specific opening date has been given for the terminal.
During the tour, participants also will see 18 new boarding gates (three of which are open), check out special exhibits and public art, and meet dogs that are part of the airport’s new Pets Unstressing Passengers program.
You must register at LAX Appreciation Day to receive tickets (called boarding passes) and parking passes for a specific time Saturday. After you register, you’ll receive an email confirmation. Don’t bring backpacks and large bags. They are not allowed and even small bags will be subject to search.
Some of the terminal’s highlights include the Great Hall designed by Fentress Architects with a cascading roof-line meant to mimic flowing ocean waves. Inside, that means ceilings as high as 110 feet in some places and a space the size of three football fields.
The airport says the new facility will be able to process 4,500 passengers an hour (in 2011 that rate was 2,800 an hour) and achieve an average walking time of 20 minutes from aircraft to curbside. Almost half the seats at the 18 new boarding gates have electrical outlets for charging devices.
The big buzz about the terminal centers on 31 new eateries (although they won’t be open during the preview). Nine will be in the pre-security area and 22 in the post-security area. Ink.sack, Border Grill, Umami burger, Larder at Tavern, Chaya and other L.A.-known eateries are part of the mix.
