Fastow’s Deal Not Appropriate to Actions
As reported in The Times’ California section on Jan. 14, San Diego businessman Carmen J. Palmieri was sentenced to 30 years in prison for swindling 191 elderly people out of $13 million.
Meanwhile, Enron Corp.’s Andrew S. Fastow manages to pull off a plea bargain and will receive only a 10-year sentence, even though he bilked thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of hardworking Americans; seriously damaged or outright bankrupted retirement funds; and planned the greatest fraud perpetrated on a state (California) in U.S. history (“Fastows Plead Guilty to Enron Charges,” Jan. 15).
If true justice is to be served, then why didn’t Fastow receive at least a 40-year sentence? What gives?
