John Corrigan appointed Times business editor, Mary Braswell named weekend editor

The Los Angeles Times on Thursday promoted John Corrigan to business editor and Mary Braswell to weekend editor. The moves, effective immediately, fill vacancies created by the formation this week of The Times’ new arts and entertainment department.

Corrigan replaces Sallie Hofmeister, who on Wednesday was named assistant managing editor for arts and entertainment. Hofmeister will oversee the combining of the newspaper’s coverage of arts, media and entertainment.

Braswell replaces Craig Turner, who was named arts and entertainment editor.

Corrigan, a Times deputy business editor for the last two years, joined the paper in 1999 after stints at other Southland newspapers, including the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Daily News. He joined the Business section in 2001 as an assistant business editor and was the editor of the 2003 series “The Wal-Mart Effect,” which won a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting.

Braswell had been deputy weekend editor since 2007. Before that she spent a decade as The Times’ deputy foreign editor, helping manage two dozen bureaus around the globe. Before coming to The Times in 1989, Braswell was a news copy chief for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner.
