Ed Ruscha archives acquired by Ransom Center in Texas

The archives of Ed Ruscha will reside at the University of Texas at Austin, whose Harry Ransom Center has acquired the artist’s personal collection of documents, photographs and sketches.

Officials said on Wednesday that the materials would eventually be accessible to the public at the Ransom Center after the items were cataloged and processed. A small selection of materials from the archive will be on display in the Ransom Center’s lobby through Dec. 1.

The archives contain Ruscha’s five personal journals containing preliminary sketches and notes, correspondence and photographs, as well as materials related to the making of his artist’s book of Jack Kerouac’s “On The Road.”

Also among the items in the archives are portfolios, materials relating to his short films and several art commissions.

The Harry Ransom Center houses the papers of numerous notable cultural figures, including Arthur Miller, Stella Adler and David Mamet. The center is an archive and museum that houses millions of historical documents.

Ruscha, 75, a longtime Los Angeles resident, is most closely associated with the pop-art movement. The artist said in a statement that the “thought that my working documentation could be in this magnificent repository is a wonderful honor and destination of great respect. I now see that the Ransom Center is the home to end all homes.”
