Following a week in which John Baldessari, Catherine Opie and Barbara Kruger all resigned from the board of trustees at Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art, Ed Ruscha has also resigned, leaving no artists remaining on the museum’s board.

The artist’s wife, Danna Ruscha, posted the following comment on the Facebook page of L.A. Times art critic Christopher Knight, beneath a piece he wrote on the pivotal role of artists in shaping MOCA historically and the warning sent by the current exodus: “‎Christopher Knight, Ed has resigned. i guess they haven’t announced it yet.”

The note was posted Monday at 8:23 a.m. A museum representative has since confirmed the resignation. Ruscha’s studio assistant wrote in response to an email: “Ed is out of the country and currently unavailable for comment.”

[Updated 1:45pm: Culture Monster has obtained the resignation email sent to MOCA director Jeffrey Deitch on Sunday, July 15. It reads:

I hereby submit my resignation from the position I occupy on the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Board of Trustees. My defection may look obvious, but it will be all the better for the museum, which is on a course different than I imagined, but one I hope to support in the future.

Sincerely,
Ed Ruscha]
