Emmys 2014: Tony Awards, Neil Patrick Harris song ‘Bigger’ are winners
Among the many statuettes handed out on Saturday at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles were trophies in recognition of other entertainment awards shows — a bit of inside Hollywood meta-congratulations. The 2013 Tony Awards broadcast on CBS walked away with two big wins for special class program and for the song “Bigger.”
The satirical number, written by theater scribes Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, was performed by Neil Patrick Harris during the 67th annual Tony Awards. The song included comic references to some prominent musicals, including “Once,” “Kinky Boots” and “Matilda.” Mike Tyson, the former boxing champion, made a surprise cameo on stage during the musical number — a nod to his one-man stage production.
On Saturday, the Tony Awards beat out the Oscars, Golden Globes, the opening ceremony of the Sochi Olympic Games and NBC’s “The Sound of Music Live!” to win special class program.
The Tonys broadcast has won in the same two Emmy categories for the past two years.
Harris can be seen performing “Bigger” in the video clip above. On Sunday, the actor concluded his run in the Broadway production of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” for which he won a Tony. He will be succeeded in the role by actor Andrew Rannells.
