‘Red Tails,’ Kerry Washington among NAACP Image Award winners

“Red Tails,” the World War II drama about the Tuskegee airmen, was named best picture at the 44th NAACP Image Awards on Friday evening at the Shrine Auditorium.

But the evening’s biggest winner was actress Kerry Washington. She won for actress in a TV drama series for ABC’s “Scandal,” supporting actress in a motion picture for “Django Unchained” and the NAACP President’s Award in recognition of special achievement and public service.

Denzel Washington won the Image Award for actor in a motion picture for “Flight,” while Viola Davis earned the top actress award for “Won’t Back Down.” Samuel L. Jackson won supporting actor honors for “Django Unchained.”

“Beasts of the Southern Wild” earned two awards: independent film and director for Benh Zeitlin.

On the television side, “Scandal” won for dramatic TV series and BET’s “The Game” received the award for comedy series. LL Cool J was named best actor in a drama series for “NCIS: Los Angeles”.” Don Cheadle won for actor in a comedy series for Showtime’s “House of Lies,” while Cassi Davis earned an Image Award in the actress category for TBS” “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne.”

Lifetime’s “Steel Magnolias” was named best television movie, miniseries or dramatic special.

Jamie Foxx was honored as entertainer of the year, while Sidney Poitier announced Harry Belafonte as the Spingarn Medal recipient.

Steve Harvey hosted the two-hour ceremony that was telecast on NBC.
