This post has been updated. See note below for details.

The debut album from Shovels and Rope has propelled the Charleston, S.C.-based indie folk-country duo past such stalwarts as Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, Dwight Yoakam, Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller and Richard Thompson to lead the 2013 Americana Music Award nominations with four nods, including album of the year for “O’ Be Joyful.”

But the veterans weren’t far behind, with Harris and Miller collecting three nominations apiece, both also delivering album of the year contenders, and both also in the running for artist of the year, along with Yoakam and Thompson.

The other albums in the running for the Americana group’s album of the year honor are “Buddy and Jim” from Miller and Lauderdale (who play Tuesday night at the Troubadour in West Hollywood), Harris and Crowell’s “Old Yellow Moon,” Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison’s “Cheaters Game” and Oklahoma newcomer John Fullbright’s “From the Ground Up.”

Shovels and Rope, consisting of husband-wife singer-songwriters Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, also turned up in the emerging artist category with Fullbright, J.D. McPherson and Milk Carton Kids.

Nominations were announced Tuesday morning at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, the second time the nominees have been unveiled on the West Coast.

The full list of nominees is available at the Americana Music Assn.’s website. Winners will be announced Sept. 18 in a ceremony to be held at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn.

Update at 12:50 p.m.: An earlier version of this post said this was the first time the nominations were announced from the West Coast. Nominations also were announced in Los Angeles last year.
