Sushi, yoga and evening walk on the wild side

Share

Dominic Monaghan’s pre-summer blockbuster “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” imdb is in theaters across the land tonight, and the Hollywood Hills resident just might be in the audience.

“I’m OK watching myself on-screen,” he said. “I won’t watch a movie over and over, but I’m not one of those actors who just hates it. And with ‘Origins,’ I enjoyed the whole experience. I play a young man who can manipulate electricity, which comes in handy.”

You might already know Monaghan from TV’s “Lost,” and he played Merry in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy (he still has his latex Hobbit feet).

A lot of fantasy, but his weekends are the real deal.

Meet Mojave

My Saturday start by giving my pet royal python, Mojave, a good slither and a bit of morning sun. She’s only a baby, about a foot and a half long, but she needs attention.

After that, I’ll go get some breakfast at Hugo’s on Santa Monica. Good place, very healthy food, and I love the Dragon Pearl Jasmine tea.

I’ll order Papa’s Eggs, which is basically a scramble with chicken sausage and bacon, a few different vegetables, some rice.

On the way home, I’ll stop at Erewhon Natural Foods Market. Then I’ll invite friends over and we’ll watch some football -- you may know it as soccer. Hopefully, my favorite team will be on, Manchester United.

A sushi soiree

In the evening, I like to go out for some sushi. A great place is Sugar Fish in Marina del Rey. It’s like a slightly cheaper version of Katsuya. Not a really formal place -- it almost reminds me of a frozen-yogurt joint inside. Very vibrantly lit, quite small and boutiquey, very casual. I found out about it through my friend Elijah Wood. If you go out to eat with people who can’t make their mind up, this is a good place to take them, because there’s only about 10 things on the menu.

Another good sushi place is En Sushi on Hillhurst; a little bigger menu, great salads, good service.

After dinner, I’m all about movies, and the New Beverly Cinema has them quite late. They play a lot of vintage double bills. Recently they had “Blade Runner” and “Alien.” There’s always a theme.

No place like Home

On Sunday morning, I’ll head to a place called Home for breakfast. It’s like eating at home; all the cups and plates are different. They do a thing called a Green Sandwich, which is sourdough bread with avocado and lime squeezed all over it. Really tasty. And the curry chicken salad I really like.

Then I’d go to a yoga session, but I don’t really want to tell you where it’s at. It’s a pretty small studio in Los Feliz, that’s as much as I’ll say.

Dom at Dom’s

For dinner, I’ll throw a shout-out to one of my favorite places, Little Dom’s. I asked if I could drink there for free since my name is Dominic, but they wouldn’t go for it. They make one of the best thin-crust pizzas in town. They also do a terrific beet root and burrata starter, and there’s a terrific wine list. And very cute, friendly girls working, which is always a plus.

After that, I’ll go for a night walk with my flashlight in Griffith Park. I’ll see how close I can get to the coyotes, or if I can find any snakes slithering around. There’s a lot of black widow spiders too. People in L.A. would be terrified if they knew all the things that were very close by at night.
