Safe rooms and other hot design trends are being showcased this weekend in L.A.
Go big or go small. Or figure out a way to do both.
That’s the choice facing design fans in Los Angeles this weekend.
Dwell on Design returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center on June 24-26 with more than 350 exhibitors and 100 speakers. Topics include how to regulate energy consumption with smart technology and installing safe rooms — a safe place to retreat to in the face of danger, such as a break-in or a natural disaster.
It’s the second year in a row that Dwell on Design has explored the topic of safe rooms, underscoring the public’s interest. The panel is headlined “The Modern Bomb Shelter: Why People Are Investing in Safe Rooms,” and the building trend is described as being driven by “an anxiety-ridden cultural climate.”
Also taking the spotlight this weekend: Oscar nominee Gary Sinise, whose Gary Sinise Foundation provides specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans. Cassy Aoyagi, president of FormLA Landscaping and the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants will discuss the effect of sustainable landscapes on our homes and communities.
The 30,000-square-foot outdoor showcase is a popular destination at Dwell on Design, and this year’s event should be no different. Garden designer and TV host Jamie Durie has signed on to curate Dwell Outdoor. The outdoor area will include contemporary outdoor furnishings, an outdoor cinema, and three full-scale prefab homes and two converted shipping containers equipped with solar power and water-efficient fixtures.
New exhibitors include Adam Raiola outdoor furnishings, Benjamin Moore Paints, MTI Baths, Rad Furniture, Resysta decking and Sonoma Forge faucets and showers. Dwell regulars include Astek wall coverings, Duravit, NanaWall Systems, SolarCity, the Shade Store and Toto USA (attendees can’t seem to resist those $10,000 smart toilets).

A few miles away, at Mack Sennett Studios in Silver Lake, Intro/LA seeks to offer a more intimate version of the trade show you’ll find at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The second design festival is an opportunity to view the latest designs from local and international designers.
Exhibitors include British lighting designer Tom Dixon, Stockholm furniture company Massproductions, Los Angeles-based lighting designer Brendan Ravenhill, Waka Waka and Bend Goods among others.
