Two Los Angeles police officers were injured Tuesday night while driving to provide backup assistance to other officers who were pursuing a suspected car thief.

The officers’ vehicle crashed about 9 p.m. near the corner of Exposition and Crenshaw boulevards, said LAPD Officer Mike Lopez.

It’s unclear what led to the collision, which was initially reported as a solo-vehicle crash. However, at least two other vehicles and the police vehicle were involved, said LAPD Sgt. Carlton Brown. The occupants of the other vehicles were not injured, Brown added.

Both officers were taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition.

The officers who were involved in the initial pursuit of a stolen vehicle eventually captured a suspect, Lopez said.

The suspect, an adult man, had gotten out of the vehicle near Somerset Drive and Adams Boulevard and led officers on a brief foot pursuit, Lopez said.

The man was detained and his identity was not immediately available.
