College basketball: No. 3 Kansas edges TCU on the road

Frank Mason III scored 22 points and No. 3 Kansas won its 12th game in a row and 26th consecutive conference by beating Texas Christian, 86-80, to start Big 12 Conference play Friday night in Fort Worth.

Senior Landen Lucas had 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to help the Jayhawks (12-1, 1-0) hold off the Horned Frogs, who led by 10 points in the first half and stayed close after winning 11 of their first 12 under first-year coach Jamie Dixon, a former TCU guard.

Kansas improved to 13-1 against TCU, almost four years after the Jayhawks’ only loss in the series on the same court. But it wasn’t easy improving to 21-0 in Big 12 openers.

Vladimir Brodziansky had a career-high 28 points and nine rebounds for TCU (11-2, 0-1), and Kenrich Williams had his fifth double-double this season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 4 Baylor 76, at Oklahoma 50: Johnathan Motley had 19 points and 13 rebounds as unbeaten Baylor jumped on Oklahoma early and breezed to a victory.

The Bears (12-0, 1-0) remain one of five unbeaten teams in Division I. Off to their best start in 16 years, Baylor raced to a 36-17 halftime lead in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

Oklahoma (6-6, 0-1) got no closer over the final 20 minutes, and Baylor expanded the lead to as many as 34 points.

Manu Lecompte added 14 points for Baylor and Jo Lual-Acuil had 12 points and eight rebounds.

No. 11 West Virginia 92, at Oklahoma State 75: Daxter Miles Jr. scored 22 points and Jevon Carter had 15 points and six assists as the Mountaineers won the Big 12 opener for both teams.

Nathan Adrian added nine points and eight rebounds for West Virginia (12-1, 1-0), which won its eighth straight.

Phil Forte scored 18 points, including four three-pointers, to lead Oklahoma State, which saw its four-game winning streak snapped.

SOUTHLAND

Men

at Cal State Fullerton 99, Bethesda 56: Tre Coggins scored 24 points for the Titans, who built a 49-23 halftime lead and rolled past their Division II opponent. Coggins shot eight for 13 from the field and made five three-pointers for Fullerton (6-7), which won easily despite missing 22 of 38 free throws.

at UC Irvine 101, Life Pacific 43: Luke Nelson had 16 points and all 13 players scored for the Anteaters (7-9) in their final tuneup before Wednesday’s Big West opener against Long Beach State. The 58-point margin of victory was 10 shy of the school record set in a 91-23 win over Pomona-Pitzer in 2002.

Seattle 80, UC Santa Barbara 76: Brendan Westendorf had 13 of his 28 points in the final three minutes to lead a frantic comeback by the Redhawks (8-7). Gabe Vincent and Max Heidegger each scored 17 for the Gauchos (2-10), in their second game since losing three players to academic ineligibility.

Women

at No. 10 UCLA 67, Utah 56: Jordin Canada had 18 points and seven assists to help the Bruins (10-2, 1-0) hand the Utes (11-1, 0-1) their first loss of the season in the teams’ Pac-12 Conference opener. Monqiue Billings had 10 points and 13 rebounds for UCLA, which has won 19 consecutive home games.

at USC 79, No. 20 Colorado 54: Sadie Edwards and Courtney Jaco combined for 30 points as the Trojans (10-2, 1-0) began Pac-12 play with an impressive win over the Buffaloes (10-2, 0-1). Four USC players reached double figures: Edwards had 16 points, Jaco 14, Minyon Moore 12 and Aliyah Mazyck 11.
