Irvine police were serving search warrant when officers shot man
Police were in the process of serving a search warrant in a lewd conduct case when officers shot a 35-year-old man outside the leasing office of an Irvine apartment complex Tuesday morning.
The man, identified as Ronald Williams, remains hospitalized. His condition wasn’t clear, though police said he was conscious and talking.
Williams was being investigated in a case that involves alleged lewd conduct with a child, said Lt. Julia Engen, spokeswoman for the Irvine Police Department. Further details on that case were not available.
Officers encountered Williams outside the complex’s leasing office before the shooting, but Engen declined to elaborate on the moments that led up to the 10:40 a.m. shooting.
Investigators also found what appear to be two handguns near the scene of the shooting, police said.
Scott Johnson, an electrician who was working nearby, said he heard three quick shots.
“I heard some yelling but couldn’t hear what they said,” Johnson said.
Cindee Jackson was at the leasing center about to fill out paperwork to possibly live at Doria Apartment Homes when the shots were fired.
“We saw there was a man with a rifle and later found out he was a detective in plainclothes,” Jackson. “We went on lockdown.”
