Rapper 2 Chainz has been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance after police at Los Angeles International Airport said last summer he was carrying codeine, a key ingredient in chemical mixture “sizzurp.”

The 36-year-old MC, born Tauheed Epps, was removed from an outbound flight on June 11 and arrested by LAX police officers after a search of his checked baggage.

Airport police responded to a narcotics investigation at about 1 p.m. in the baggage check area of Terminal 5, where Transportation Security Administration agents told officers they found marijuana and a bottle of promethazine with codeine -- the key ingredients in the drink known as “sizzurp” or “purple drank” -- in Epps’ checked bag.

The potentially dangerous drink has been popularized in Southern rap artists’ songs.

Los Angeles County district attorney spokesman Ricardo Santiago said Epps is due to appear in court April 8.
