A homeowner in Sacramento shot and killed two burglars in self-defense early Sunday morning, police officials said.

Just after midnight, Sacramento police were called to a home in the 1000 block of Arcade Boulevard in North Sacramento after receiving a report of a burglary in progress. But by the time police arrived two minutes later, two men in their late teens or early 20s who were reportedly burglarizing the home were dead.

According to a preliminary investigation, the unidentified adult occupant of the home “confronted the suspects inside the house and fired a firearm in self-defense,” the Sacramento Police Department said in a statement.

The residents of the home, a couple, have been victims of break-ins before, police told the Sacramento Bee.

“There is a history of being victims of crime in the past,” department spokeswoman Officer Michelle Gigante said.

The residents were not hurt in the incident and are cooperating with detectives, officials said.
