Sinkhole develops in Torrance after water main break

Share

A sinkhole developed at an intersection in a residential section of Torrance on Sunday, forcing two road closures, authorities said.

Firefighters responded about 1 a.m. to the intersection of Monterey Street and Flower Avenue, where a broken water main had produced a sinkhole 6 feet long and 3 feet wide, Torrance Fire Department Capt. Scott Kahn said.

The front of an SUV had fallen into the sinkhole, which was about 2 feet deep, Kahn said. Police provided traffic control and a city crew towed the SUV out of the hole, he added.

The intersection is expected to reopen later Sunday.

The incident comes roughly a week after a water main break was reported at the same intersection.

The previous break occurred on Dec. 19, according to the Torrance Police Department.
