Police break up unruly crowd at UCLA’s ‘Undie Run’
A rowdy crowd at UCLA’s student “Undie Run” prompted a response by campus police and the LAPD early Thursday morning, according to officials.
Officers arrived and began dispersing crowds around 1 a.m., UCLA Campus Police Sgt. J. Pak told City News Service. There were no arrests.
The “Undie Run” is not an official UCLA organized event, said Nancy Greenstein, spokeswoman for the University of California Police Department.
“It’s a gathering of students that has just taken off and become a tradition. I don’t think this year was any different from last year,” she said. “They’re letting off steam. It’s something they do. I wouldn’t call the event rowdy.”
The event drew roughly 8,000 runners along with “several hundred spectators,” City News Service reported
Danielle Bell, a 20-year-old UCLA junior, said she did see students and non-students acting fired up.
“People were definitely crazy,” she said. “There were people jumping into the fountain. I know a lot of people go to [the run] and drink before.”
Bell said she did not witness anyone drinking alcohol at the run, but did note the law enforcement presence.
“There were tons of police everywhere,” she said. “They were mainly just directing people. I didn’t see any confrontations.”
