Two small brush fires more than 100 miles apart burned dozens of acres Friday.

In Ventura County, firefighters were battling a fire in a hilly area on the south side of Simi Valley.

Nearly 30 acres of light brush near the intersection of Fitzgerald Road and Sequoia Avenue had burned by late Friday, according to a Ventura County Fire Department dispatcher.

A total of 70 firefighters and several hand crews were attempting to encircle the blaze, which was reported at 5:57 p.m., the dispatcher said. No homes were threatened by the fire, which was being pushed by light winds, she said. It was 90% contained.

The fire was the second brush-fueled blaze Friday in Southern California.

A 20-acre fire that broke out about 1 p.m. in the Menifee area of Riverside County was fully contained by 2:30 p.m., according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

No structures were damaged by the blaze at Holland Road and Southshore Drive, a mostly flat farming area.

About 50 firefighters were aided by an air tanker and a water-dropping helicopter, authorities said.
