The front of a small apartment building in the Pico-Union neighborhood collapsed Sunday night, injuring at least four people.

A portion of the building in the 1600 block of South Westmoreland Avenue collapsed shortly before 9 p.m. Fire officials said between 20 and 30 people were inside at the time.

None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Firefighters were shoring up the rest of the building, partly to ensure that it would not fall on neighboring buildings.

Assistant Chief Rick Garcia of the Los Angeles Fire Department said officials were “relatively sure” that no one was buried in the rubble. “But we can’t take that chance without checking,” he said.

He said eight families were likely displaced.

Fire officials said the building’s age and construction may have contributed to the fall.
