Dukakis should park his opinions

Re “A Dukakis win in Westwood,” Nov. 30

Your article on Michael Dukakis’ campaign against parking scofflaws raises more questions than answers. Is Dukakis even a resident of Westwood? Does he have to deal with the parking issues that have been present here for so long?

Apron parking is a Band-Aid to the larger issue of parking in Westwood, so why start ticketing residents if there are only 857 legal parking spaces for 5,700 vehicles? If he is trying to change something, why not offer a solution?

Once again, the Los Angeles City Council and other assorted bureaucrats are falling all over themselves to appease a defrocked celebrity (recall Peter Graves and Julie Newmar in the great leaf blower debacle of 1997).

Now Dukakis wants UCLA students to take the bus (or is it eat cake?) because he is offended by apron parking.

As a self-styled policy wonk, perhaps Dukakis should weigh the societal costs to be accrued in pursuit of the elusive parking space versus any presumed aesthetic benefits that could result from this selective law enforcement.
