Re “Major work begins on Expo Line,” Aug. 11

Alas, L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has never met a microphone or a camera that he dislikes. So he talks and talks and trusts that no one will much remember what he said by the next day. Luckily for him, the typical voter has the attention span of a mite, so he or she likely does not remember that a quarter of a century or more ago, Yaroslavsky came out against mass transit rail construction from downtown to the Westside. In the interim, he generally has been against light rail and subways. If the serving-for-life politicians were out of the way, we might have been in our second decade of mass transit -- not wondering whether we’ll have it by 2020. But, to give them their due, perhaps a change of heart has at long last arrived.
