Mailbag: Bye-bye parklet, so much for progress

Share

I am a first-year Art-A-Fair exhibitor and have been carefully following Laguna Beach’s events and activities since June.

I was impressed with the forward thinking that led to the parklet outside the Alessa restaurant on Forest Avenue. Now, I am, like columnist David Hansen, disappointed in the city’s cancellation of the permit. He said it quite well.

The owner spent $30,000 not only as a benefit to his business, but to the city. The council’s action is typical of government that knows nothing about business and makes decisions that destroy business opportunities, instead of stepping out of the way and letting entrepreneurs thrive, especially in a circumstance beneficial to the consumer — and the city — as well.

The parklet, as Hansen said, brought a European flair to Forest Avenue, which is now lost.
