Matt Barkley continues to struggle a bit

Share

USC quarterback Matt Barkley, who lost his Heisman Trophy front-runner status last week, struggled again at times in the Trojans’ 27-9 victory over California on Saturday at the Coliseum.

Barkley completed 22 of 34 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

He has passed for 12 touchdowns with five interceptions this season.

“I’m not looking every week to try to get stats or to get a flashy game,” he said. “I’m happy with how the offense performed to a certain extent.”

After being sacked four times and absorbing multiple hits against Stanford, Barkley was not sacked against Cal.

Heidari returns

Kicker Andre Heidari returned after being sidelined the last two games because of a knee injury. He kicked field goals of 40 and 41 yards.

Offensive line moves

Sophomore Aundrey Walker, whose status as the starting left tackle was in question after last week’s performance against Stanford, started but rotated every few series with freshman Max Tuerk in the first half.

Walker started and played the majority of the second half.

Abe Markowitz started in place of Marcus Martin at left guard. Martin came into the game in the fourth quarter when Markowitz moved to center to replace Khaled Holmes, who appeared to reinjure his ankle.

Scott on TV

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott on Saturday called DirecTV’s compromise proposals to carry his conference’s fledgling networks on a limited basis “kind of a head fake.”

Scott spoke with reporters at the Coliseum during halftime of a game not available for viewing on DirecTV and several other major television distributors in Southern California because they have not agreed to carry the Pac-12 Networks.

DirecTV made one proposal to carry the network as a stand-alone channel and another to offer games on a pay-per-view basis until a formal agreement could be reached to carry all games. Scott said those offers were unsatisfactory because other networks such as ESPN and the Big Ten Network are available to all DirecTV customers.

Injury policy?

Scott said he has spoken with officials from other conferences to gather information and gauge their policies on reporting injuries. Scott said he had also fielded a phone call from USC Coach Lane Kiffin, who has decided for the first time this season not to divulge injury information.

“I don’t have a position yet except that I feel given what I’ve seen, the conference should have a serious conversation about it and decide if there should be a conference-wide policy on it or if it’s something better left for the schools” individually, Scott said.

Quick hits

USC linebacker Hayes Pullard had his left arm in a sling after the game. Pullard had four tackles before he was injured…. Morgan Breslin’s 41/2 tackles for losses were the most since Lawrence Jackson had 51/2 against Arizona State in 2007. Breslin’s three sacks were the most since Rey Maualuga had three against Illinois in the 2008 Rose Bowl.
