Josh Beckett to be examined for numbness in fingers

Josh Beckett will undergo an MRI exam Tuesday in an attempt to find the source of numbness in his fingers.

Beckett has been sidelined since May 13 with a strained groin. He is believed to have been experiencing the numbness before then.

Beckett was 0-5 with a 5.19 earned-run average when he landed on the disabled list.

While Beckett is awaiting the results of his examination Tuesday, Stephen Fife will be pitching for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. Fife has been on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation since April 21.

A.J. Ellis, who was hit by a pitch on his left wrist, underwent an X-ray exam that came back negative.

Left-handed reliever Scott Elbert will resume his minor league rehabilitation assignment on Wednesday with triple-A Albuquerque. Elbert, who is recovering from a pair of off-season elbow surgeries, has pitched in eight minor league games between Class A and double A.
